Kong’s Not All!
Most people are aware of a wonderful toy called the Kong. You may have even seen other food dispensing toys at the pet store but not really known how to use them. There are many different types of food dispensing toys and it’s important to use them in rotation to keep your busy puppy happy and satisfied.
Different toys are designed for different play styles. Some, like the Rubber Jump ‘n Jack, are designed for moderate chewing and dental care. Others, like the hard plastic Nibble Kibble are better for knocking around. Rubber or silicone lick mats are good for soothing and calming a stressed puppy, but they will not stand up to even light chewing; they’re to be licked only, and under close supervision.
Some toys are designed to have food or liquid frozen inside of them. These toys are typically tougher than other toys and designed for chewing.
Others are made of a hard plastic; these are typically the ones the dog is supposed to knock around to loosen food; they’re not for chewing.
Even more, there’s puzzles that are designed to teach fine motor skills and require a soft touch; you’ll want to build up to these. Many of Nina Ottosson’s puzzles fall into this category.
